Setting up a local web server step by step

Posted on Posted in Web Development

We all need a space to test all our latest projects but not all of us have $5 extra to spend on hosting. I will show you an easy way to setup a local (Your computer you are working on or have on your network) server on your computer. You can run any html website just by clicking on it without the need of a server but at the end of the day you want to run a website with a database. If you want to run a website with a database you will need a program called MySQL to keep all your database files.

So let me break it down for you.

To start a local server you will need:

  1. Apache (This will make it possible for your users to see the sites content)
  2. MySQL (This is the database that will store all your files example username, password and so on)

And the best thing is it will not cost you a penny.

Let’s get started

First off all you will need to download a program called xampp and you can download it from Here

xampp, server, web server
Download the latest version of the software

Once downloaded click on the file that you just downloaded

Click on the downloaded exe

Once you clicked on the exe you might get a message prompting that your anti-virus is activated it is nothing serious just click yes.

Some antiviruses might interfere with the install process just click YES

You will be represented with one more screen just click on OK (it’s the only option :))

Click on Ok

From Here on it are just your normal install windows. Follow the instructions below.

Click on Next
Make sure that everything is checked and click Next
You can change this directory if you want to but i normally keep it at default once you are done you can click on next
Click on Next
Wait for the installation to finish click Next
Now the installation is finish click finish
Choose your language and click on save
This screen is known as the Control Panel this is where you can start and stop various services
Click on start on the right hand side next to MySQL and Apache. If everything when successful it would show the names with a green background.

Now your server is all setup and you are ready to start your website. You can look at your site by typing in the address bar localhost or 127.0.0.1.You will see a Xampp site it is the default index pages of the xampp services. To see these files you can go to the destination you installed the services remember (c:\xampp) or whatever you chose.

Once you are in the root folder follow this root

c:\xampp\htdocs\

That is where all the files are if you delete these files and replace it with your own you will see your files on the URL: localhost or 127.0.0.1

YOU’RE DONE

  1. I’ve been browsing on-line more than 3 hours these days, yet I never discovered
any fascinating article like yours. It’s beautiful value enough for me.

Personally, if all site owners and bloggers made excellent content material as you did, the internet will likely be
a lot more useful than ever before.
